Build a tool worth keeping.

Modular tools built from interchangeable heads, handles and bindings. Pick materials for their stats and traits, cast metal parts in a Smeltery, then keep improving your tools by using them: they gain levels, slots and modifiers.

Getting started

Three blocks do all the work. Craft a book with a stick for the in-game handbook. JEI or EMI (optional) show every recipe, melting and casting step.

1 · Part Builder

Patterns & parts

3 planks over 2 sticks. Put in a blank pattern and click the part you want to carve. Patterns are reusable.

Pattern + material makes a part: wood, stone, flint, bone, bamboo, blaze rods, diamonds, string, leather, honeycomb, chain.

2 · Smeltery

Metal parts

Bricks around a furnace, glass on top. Burns any furnace fuel. Ores melt into double metal.

Metals (copper, iron, gold, alloys, netherite) are cast into parts with gold casts.

3 · Tool Station

Assemble & refit

A stick over a crafting table, with planks at the sides and below. Three parts make a tool.

Put a tool in to swap a part, repair it, add a modifier, or remove one with a sponge.

Tools never break. At 1 durability a tool is worn: no drops and no damage bonus, and it mines at hand speed until you repair it.

Tools

Every tool is one head, one handle and one binding (swords use a guard). Damage, speed, durability and harvest tier come from the parts.

ToolPartsNotes
Pickaxe · Axe · Shovel · Hoehead + handle + bindingAxes strip logs, shovels make paths, hoes till.
Swordblade + handle + guardSweeping attacks; cuts cobwebs.
Hammerhammer head + tough handle + tough bindingMines 3×3 (5×5 and 7×7 with Expanded).
Excavatorexcavator head + tough handle + tough bindingDigs 3×3.
Broad Axebroad axe head + tough handle + tough bindingFells whole trees.

Sneak to mine a single block with heavy tools. Heavy parts cost more: big heads take 8 material, tough handles and bindings take 3.

Materials

Heads set the base stats, handles multiply them and bindings add a bonus. Every material brings a trait, and traits from several parts stack. cast means the Smeltery is required.

Smeltery

A single block with its own tank. Add fuel and things to melt; metals pool in the tank, alloys mix by themselves, and the selected metal is poured into whatever cast you put in.

Melting

Ingots, nuggets, blocks, raw ores and ore blocks. Ores give ×2 (configurable). Old iron, gold and netherite gear melts back down too.

Click a metal in the tank to pour it; shift-click to dump it. Hoppers work: items go in the top, fuel in the sides, output comes out the bottom.

Alloys

Rose gold = 3 copper + 1 gold

Amethyst bronze = copper + amethyst

Netherite = 4 netherite scrap + 4 gold

Casts

Pour gold onto any pattern to make a reusable gold cast of that part (2 ingots). Gold poured onto any ingot makes an ingot cast.

Casting

With a cast in place, the selected metal becomes that part or ingot. With no cast, it's cast into a storage block.

Levels, slots & expansion braces

Mining with the right tool or landing a melee hit earns tool XP. New tools have 3 upgrade slots and 1 ability slot.

Every level

+1 upgrade slot and +2% durability and mining speed. Max level 10 by default.

Levels 5 & 10

+1 ability slot each.

Expansion braces

Apply Copper, then Gilded, then Astral at the Tool Station. Each adds an upgrade slot (Astral adds an ability slot too). They're permanent and use no slot.

Modifiers

Add ingredients at the Tool Station. Many modifiers need several items per level, and partial progress is saved on the tool. Each level takes one slot of its type. A sponge removes the newest modifier. Storage blocks count as 9 items (quartz blocks as 4).

Enchanting tables, books and anvil merging don't work on Workshop tools: the Tool Station is the upgrade path. The anvil can still rename them.

WT BeeBlock Workshop

A separate optional addon with two hive-themed modifiers: Waxed durability protection and Honeybound slowing hits. Works with vanilla honeycomb and honey bottles, plus Forestry and Productive Bees if installed.

For pack makers & addon authors

Most balance lives in datapacks and config, so packs can change it without code.

Datapack recipe types

wt_workshop:material marks an item as a tool material and says how much it counts for (e.g. 9 nuggets = 1).

wt_workshop:melting defines what an item melts into. Set ore: true to apply the ore multiplier.

wt_workshop:alloying defines alloys from molten inputs.

Config

serverconfig/wt_workshop-server.toml sets slot counts, max level, the XP curve, the per-level bonus, ore multiplier, tank size, tree size, expansion tiers, Siphoning tuning and per-material head durability and speed.

Java addon API

Register namespaced modifiers with net.wtworkshop.api.AddonModifiers. The Tool Station, tooltips, JEI/EMI pages, partial progress, slots and optional per-tool art are handled for you. See ADDON-API.md. The BeeBlock addon is the worked example.

Recipe viewers

JEI and EMI are optional. When either is installed, WT Workshop adds pages for parts, casting, melting, alloys, modifiers and expansions.

Install & support

Installing

Put the jar in mods on both client and server. Keep only one WT Workshop jar. Back up your world before updating, as this is a beta.

Tools and parts from older versions convert automatically when they're in your inventory.
